The Modern Job Hunt

At a recent conference, the message from execs was clear: finding top talent in this market is tough.

Since the onset of the pandemic, the employee value proposition has shifted dramatically — it’s no longer just about the 9-5 job and paycheck but how work fits into a person’s life as a whole. Work and life cannot live in silos anymore, so companies who focus on hiring talent and creating a workplace that reflects this shift will win the talent wars.

It’s also interesting to look at this through the eyes of nearly the largest cohort in the workplace — millennials — who are also 90% of new parents. Burnout, a huge contributor of the Great Resignation, has changed how we look at our next role/company. Flexibility, in where, when and how one works, is now table stakes.

If recruiters stick to their traditional hiring methods using the same ol’ filters on the same ol’ platforms, they’ll miss out on top talent. Per a LinkedIn study, nearly half of moms who returned to work after taking time off say they considered a career pivot versus returning to their old jobs — because they wanted more flexible hours. Perhaps we should consider leaning into skills more than title? Workday announced that it’s launching new "skills-focused” technology that allows employers to import and export skills data from the platform. This fresh take will help the millions of mothers and caregivers who take time away from paid work to care for family at home.
